City & Guilds F-Gas Course: Professional Automotive Air Conditioning Training

Expert F-Gas Certification Training for Automotive Technicians

Under UK-retained F-gas regulation, every mechanic or technician operating automotive air conditioning service equipment must hold a DEFRA-recognised qualification in their own name. Working without the correct qualifications is illegal and can result in a civil penalty, loss of business, and inability to purchase refrigerant.

AP Auto — the trading name of AP Air Ltd — delivers industry leading City & Guilds 2079 f gas training that gives you the recognised qualification you need to stay compliant and grow your business. Our training course combines comprehensive theory with hands-on experience, and is available at our Gloucestershire premises or on-site at your workshop anywhere in the UK.

Why F-Gas Certification is Essential for Your Business

A personal qualification and a company certificate are required to work with f-gases in the UK. Compliance with f-gas regulations ensures only qualified individuals work with f-gases — and the consequences of non-compliance are serious. Here’s why f gas certification matters for your garage or workshop:

Legal Compliance

F-gas certification is mandatory for any technician handling fluorinated gases or ozone depleting substances in automotive AC systems. Without it, you cannot legally recover refrigerant, service air conditioning systems, or even purchase F-gas.

Professional Credibility

A City & Guilds 2079 qualification is recognised across the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. Employers prefer candidates with F-Gas certification, and it demonstrates commitment to professional development.

Business Protection

Operating without proper certification risks enforcement action from the Environment Agency or DEFRA, including fines and regulatory sanctions. Ensure compliance and protect your business.

Career Advancement

F-Gas certification is essential for HVAC career advancement. The HVAC sector is growing, increasing demand for certified engineers with the right skills and knowledge.

Customer Confidence

Displaying your City & Guilds certification helps build confidence with customers, showing that your ac system work meets the highest professional and environmental regulations standards.

Training at Our Gloucestershire Centre

Our professional training facility is located at Unit 11 Wisloe Road Business Park, Cambridge, GL2 7AF. The centre is fully equipped with the latest automotive air conditioning and heat pump equipment, providing a comprehensive learning environment where candidates gain practical skills on industry-standard systems. Training centers for f-gas courses can be found nationwide in the UK, but our Gloucestershire centre offers a focused, specialist experience led by experts in automotive refrigeration air conditioning.

City & Guilds 2079 Course Content

Our City & Guilds 2079 training course is designed for engineers working with refrigerants in automotive air conditioning and heat pump systems. The qualification covers all F-Gas activities under Category I, the most comprehensive level, covering installation, service, maintenance, leak checking, and recovery for any size RACHP system.

Courses combine both theoretical and practical training components. Key topics include:

Legislation & Compliance

Safety & Certification

System Knowledge

Practical Skills

An f gas course is mandatory for professionals in the RACHP industry. F-gas certifications are divided into categories based on licensed tasks, and our Category I certification is the most complete — it qualifies you to work on equipment containing any refrigerant charge size.

Our F-Gas Training Process

1

Step 1: Course Registration

Contact Paul Hall, Head of Training, to book your City & Guilds 2079 course. Choose between on-site delivery at your workshop or attendance at our Gloucestershire centre. We’ll confirm dates, group size, and logistics. Candidates need two years of experience or a related qualification to enrol.

2

Step 2: Theory Training

Comprehensive classroom coverage of f-gas regulations, environmental regulations, legislation, system operation, and safety procedures. We provide delegates with the regulatory knowledge and technical understanding needed to work confidently and legally. Key topics in F-gas training include environmental impact and regulations, handling fluorinated gases, and understanding both stationary refrigeration and mobile air conditioning applications.

3

Step 3: Hands-On Practical Training

Develop real-world practical skills under supervision from experienced industry trainers. You’ll practise leak detection and management, refrigerant recovery, system evacuation, re-gassing, and check equipment operation. Training provides hands-on experience with refrigeration equipment using professional-grade automotive AC systems.

4

Step 4: Assessment and Certification

The course includes a written examination and practical skills test. The practical assessment covers leak detection, safe refrigerant handling, and system operation. Upon successful completion, you receive the City & Guilds 2079 certificate — a DEFRA-recognised qualification in your own name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Under UK-retained F-gas regulation (originally Regulation EC 842/2006, now adapted under domestic law), any technician who services, maintains, or operates automotive air conditioning service equipment must hold a DEFRA-recognised qualification. Legal requirements exist for handling both F-gases and ozone-depleting substances. Without the correct qualifications, you cannot legally purchase refrigerant, recover refrigerant, or carry out AC system work. Non-compliance risks enforcement action, fines, and a civil penalty.

F-Gas training courses typically last five days. The course is structured to be completed in one week, covering both theory and practical assessment components. The City & Guilds 2079 Category I award involves approximately 30 guided learning hours. Please contact Paul Hall on 01453 796905 for confirmed course dates and scheduling.

Training is available at our Gloucestershire centre at Unit 11 Wisloe Road Business Park, Cambridge, GL2 7AF, or delivered on-site at your workshop anywhere in the UK. On-site delivery is particularly convenient for teams of engineers who need certification together. As one of the specialist training providers focused on automotive air conditioning courses, we bring the complete course and assessment to you.

Upon successful completion, you receive the City & Guilds 2079 — the Level 2/3 Award in F-Gas and ODS Regulations. This is a nationally recognised qualification accepted by DEFRA, the Environment Agency, and industry bodies such as REFCOM. Importantly, the City & Guilds F-Gas qualification does not expire or require renewal fees — it is a lifetime qualification. This compares favourably with other courses and providers, where F-Gas certification must be renewed every five years for compliance, with certification renewal typically costing additional fees.

All training is delivered by experienced staff with many years in the automotive air conditioning and refrigeration industry. Our trainers hold their own qualifications and bring extensive hands on experience of working with MAC systems, refrigerant handling, and F-gas compliance. Training is led by Paul Hall, Head of Training at AP Auto.
